Knights Templar Route - Tomar Private Tour from Lisbon
A journey through the Templar legacy among castles, military orders and the foundations of Portugal’s history
This private tour takes you to discover Tomar and the Knights Templar Route on an 8-hour experience with a dedicated guide. The city of Tomar was conquered from the Moors in 1147 by the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, and donated to the Knights Templar in 1159, becoming one of the most important centers of this military order.
The visit includes the Convent of Christ in Tomar, founded in 1162 by the Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Dom Gualdim Pais. This monument, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still preserves important traces of the Templar monk-knights and of their successors, the Order of Christ, who established their headquarters here.
The Castle of Tomar, whose construction began in 1160 by the Templars, was part of a defensive line against Muslim incursions during the period of the Reconquest.
The tour also includes Almourol Castle, conquered in 1129 by D. Afonso Henriques and handed over to the Order of the Temple, one of the most emblematic castles associated with Templar history in Portugal.
