Native Grape Varieties

Native Grape Varieties

Portugal is one of the countries with the greatest diversity of indigenous grape varieties in the world, which makes every wine tasting a unique experience.

The main indigenous grape varieties in the Lisbon and Central (Tejo/Bairrada) region stand out for their freshness and diversity. The dominant white varieties include Arinto, Fernão Pinto (the most widely planted), Vital and Malvasia. The reds are predominantly Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Aragonez (Tinta Roriz), Alfrocheiro and the emblematic Baga in Bairrada.

These indigenous grape varieties are valued for their adaptation to the local terroir, ensuring wines with their own identity and high quality.

Ancient Tradition

Ancient Tradition

Wine production in the Lisbon region dates back to Roman times, maintaining a deep historical heritage. The Lisbon wine region, historically known as Estremadura or Região do Oeste, has a thousand-year-old tradition of wine production, rooted since ancient times by the influence of various civilisations. This region is characterised by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in wines with great freshness, balanced acidity and at times, a subtle salinity.

The Lisbon region is not only an area of high production, but a pillar of Portuguese viticulture that has managed to preserve its ancestral character (the ‘talhas’ and traditional methods) while adapting to modern tastes.

Tradition & Innovation

Many wineries combine traditional production methods with modern technology to ensure quality and authenticity. The Lisbon wine region combines centuries-old tradition, with native grape varieties (Arinto, Fernão Pires, Ramisco) and historic appellations (Colares, Bucelas, Carcavelos), with technical innovation to produce fresh, Atlantic and aromatic wines. The modern use of winery technology, focused on freshness and acidity, has modernised production, enhancing the terroir.

The Lisbon region is subdivided into several DOCs, being one of the most diverse and dynamic, producing wines that balance ancient knowledge with contemporary viticulture techniques.
